Where Do I Recognize Persona 5’s Actors From?

Pointless and dumb is accurate. Frankly, this is less a game and more a salvaging of an aborted post about Persona 5’s voice actors. Rules: for each voice actor, choose a role that I strongly associate with them. Yes, there’s no real way to know the answer beforehand. No, don’t take it seriously.

This post contains no major spoilers for Persona 5.

A. Dark Prince / Puyo Puyo Tetris
B. Announcer / Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U
C. Dagda / Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
D. Momoshiki Otsutsuki / Boruto: Naruto the Movie
E. None of the above.

Unlike the other actors, Joker speaks so sparingly throughout Persona 5 that identifying the voice is practically impossible for me. Through a quick investigation, I learned that Xander Mobus was the deep-voiced announcer in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Maybe I’d have caught on sooner had he yelled out “Mario!” or “Lucina!” instead of Persona names. It could’ve helped since Joker speaks so little that I never became used to the voice.

A. Hisamitsu Noto / Toradora
B. Kuma / Mirror’s Edge Catalyst
C. Kousei Arima / Your Lie in April
D. Leo / Fire Emblem Fates
E. None of the above.

I only started to recognize this voice actor during the few instances when his character isn’t hollering. Turns out that the loudmouth Ryuji is performed by, surprisingly, the same guy behind the lower-voiced pianist Kousei Arima from Your Lie in April. He also played Noto Hisamitsu, a supporting character from the romantic comedy Toradora, and a handful of characters in Fire Emblem Fates, most notably Leo. If played one after another, I could probably recognize that they’re from the same guy, but separated, it’s difficult to recognize Mittelman. Especially when he gets loud.

A. Nathaniel / Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: Galactic Battles
B. Taiga Aisaka / Toradora!
C. Sumomo Ujima / Persona 4: Dancing All Night
D. Saki Mikajima / Durarara!!
E. None of the above.

Unlike Max Mittelman, Morris is easily recognizable as Taiga Aisaka, the female lead in Toradora. Amusingly, Morgana and Taiga are similar in how they hate being compared to felines (because of Taiga’s small build and temper, she is nicknamed the “Palmtop Tiger”). Furthermore, Morris also spends a fair amount of time insulting characters named Ryuji, the name of Toradora’s male lead. Taiga is more, well, angry than Morgana, while Morgana is supposedly male. Regardless, the voice that Morris uses is almost identical. I also recognize Morris as Saki Mikajima from Durarara.

A. Ami Kawashima / Toradora!
B. Kyoko Kirigiri / Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
C. Erena Todo / Love Live!
D. Emi Igawa / Your Lie in April
E. None of the above.

Let’s stay on the train for a moment as we focus the spotlight on Harlacher, who I recognize as the voice of Ami Kawashima from Toradora. Ann and Ami are both models, although Ami is far more manipulative while Ann doesn’t fight anywhere as much with Morgana (Cassandra Morris) as Ami did with Taiga. Harlacher also played Emi Igawa, a fellow pianist competing against Kousei Arima (Max Mittelman), in Your Lie in April, delivering a somewhat different, usually more subdued role than the two aforementioned characters.

A. Kanji Tatsumi / Persona 4: The Animation
B. Tony Stark (Iron Man) / Iron Man: Rise of Technovore
C. Joker / Black Butler: Book of Circus
D. Chrom / Fire Emblem Awakening
E. None of the Above.

We step away from anime for a moment with Matthew Mercer, otherwise known as the voice of Chrom in Fire Emblem Awakening and Ryoma (along with a few other characters) in Fire Emblem Fates. I’d like to say that I recognized Mercer, but the voice he’s using for Yusuke is so much different from the voice I typically associate with him that I only caught the similarities after searching him up. Among his sizable credits as a video game VO, Mercer also replaced Troy Baker as Kanji Tatsumi in a handful of Persona 4 spin-offs along with Persona 4: The Animation.

A. Minako Aino (Sailor Venus) / Sailor Moon
B. Gwendolyn / Fire Emblem Heroes
C. A2 / Nier: Automata
D. Asuna / Sword Art Online
E. None of the Above.

It took a little searching to find something that I recognized Cherami Leigh from. She played a small role in the excellent Ouran High School Host Club, but the voice used for the young character is much different than her Makoto. Next would be Asuna, the heroine of Sword Art Online, but it’s been a hell of a long time since I watched SAO, so that’s out. I vaguely recognize her as Gwendolyn in Fire Emblem Heroes, but not at all as Cecilia. Weird because she has quite a decent number of anime roles under her belt.

Absolute Zero

A. Anemone / Nier: Automata
B. Kaori Miyazono / Your Lie in April
C. Barbie / Barbie and Her Sisters in A Puppy Chase
D. Asahi / Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
E. None of the Above.

Like Cassandra Morris (Morgana), I immediately recognized Erica Lindbeck for her previous role as Kaori Miyazono, the female lead from Your Lie in April. Unlike Max Mittelman (Ryuji), her fellow actor from the same anime, the voice that Lindbeck used for Futaba is exactly the same as the one used for Kaori. Of the entire cast, I did have the most trouble not being reminded of her previous work when listening to her, but she fits Futaba well. Lindbeck also played Asahi in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, which I played just long enough to hear her performance and wonder why she sounded so familiar.

A. Altina / The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
B. Sachi / Sword Art Online
C. Rune / Rune Factory Frontier
D. Hanayo Koizumi / Love Live!
E. None of the Above.

This is a stranger one because Xanthe Hyunh as Haru sounds so familiar, yet searching up the actresses credits revealed that I’m familiar with almost none of her work. She played a small part in Sword Art Online, but I haven’t watched the episodes with Hyunh’s character in years. So where am I recognizing her voice from? I have no idea, and it really bugged me for a handful days.

Absolute Zero

A. Prompto Argentum / Final Fantasy XV
B. Smokey Brown / JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
C. Tuxedo Mask / Sailor Moon R: The Movie
D. Saito / Your Lie in April
E. None of the Above.

Another instance of being unfamiliar with the project he’s worked on. The only roles that I might recognize Robbie Daymond from is as supporting characters in Your Lie in April and the second season of Durarara, but neither of them are on-screen often. Goro Akechi easily eclipses those previous roles.

Absolute Zero

A. Mimizu / Durarara!!x2
B. Mahiru Koizumi / Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
C. Hiroko Seto / Your Lie in April
D. Yuri Koigakubo / Toradora!
E. None of the Above.

Although Carrie Keranen plays a more prominent role as Hiroko Seto, Kousei’s piano tutor and friend of his late mother, in Your Lie in April, I first became familiar with the actress’s voice as disgruntled teacher Yuri Koigakubo in Toradora. That’s mostly because the character goes a little crazy towards the middle, making for a number of amusing scenes. Finally, Keranen also plays a criminal in Durarara who tortures a member of the cast, but I haven’t gotten much farther into the series to know if she becomes more important.
