This is the most difficulty Genesis Does article that I’ve ever written. I suspect that’s because of the unique contrast between gameplay and presentation within ToeJam & Earl. The former is remarkably simple, while the latter is nonsensical. Yet I keep starting with the insanity before the gameplay, leaving me frustrated as I make the mistake of trying to understand enemies, items, and environments that, I believe, were never designed as anything but quirky and silly. As a buddy on Twitter said: “TJ&E cannot be quantified. It simply is.”
So let’s start with the gameplay.
